The Medes, an Iranian people, settled in the Iranian plateau during the late 2nd millennium BC. Historical references to the Medes can be found in Assyrian, Greek, and Armenian sources, as well as in the Bible. According to the Greek historian Herodotus, a man named Deioces united the Medes and founded the Median Kingdom in the first half of the 7th century BC. Under King Cyaxares (624-585 BC), the Medes conquered the Kingdom of Mannae. Later, in alliance with the Babylonians, they captured the Assyrian capital Nineveh in 612 BC and destroyed the Assyrian Empire. However, the Median Kingdom did not last long either; in 550 BC, the Persian king Cyrus the Great conquered it.
Azerbaijanis, who appeared in the 20th century, in the search of their national roots, distorted history by presenting the Medes as one of their ancestors. The only "argument" is that the territory of Atropatene was also part of the Median state. This, of course, is a pseudoscientific approach, as the Medes were an Iranian-speaking people. The international scientific community does not see any connection between the Medes and the Azerbaijanis. Such theories can be found only in Azerbaijani fiction and other anti-scientific literature.
