The population of Baku Governorate according to the 1886 family lists

In 1893, the Transcaucasian Statistical Committee of the civil authority of the Caucasian Administration published the statistical data on the population of Transcaucasia, which were compiled based on family lists from 1886.

The heads of governorates and regions were required to submit the necessary information, and Nikolai Seidlitz, the Committee's Chief Secretary, State Counselor, processed the materials provided by statistical committees.

According to the 1886 family lists, Baku province had 712,703 inhabitants.

Based on the aggregated data from the family lists of Baku province, the total male and female population of the province's cities (Baku, Quba, Lenkoran, Shamakhi, Geokchay, Salyan) was 139,652 people. By national affiliation, the numbers were: Russians - 23,130, Poles - 1,099, Germans, Swedes and Finns - 1,721, Armenians - 29,747, Jews - 6,690, Talysh and Tatars - 77,265 people.

Among the 301 Russians living in Quba city, 10 Georgians were also counted, similarly, among the 44 Russians living in Geokchay, 11 Georgians were included. Since the data were only based on religious affiliation, all Roman Catholics were called Poles. 350 Armenian Protestants were counted with Germans, Swedes and Finns; therefore, the total number of Armenians should be 30,097 instead of 29,747.

The total male and female population of the districts of Baku province (Baku, Geokchay, Javad, Quba, Lenkoran, Shamakhi) was 573,051 people. By national affiliation, it had the following picture: Russians - 19,313, Poles - 33, Tats - 118,165, Talysh - 47,296, Armenians - 25,712, Jews - 1,913, Kyurins - 41,849, Khinalugs - 2,167, Gaputlins - 1,078, Jeks - 7,403, Kryts - 2,027, Budugs - 2,625, Tatars - 303,470 people.

According to the 1886 family lists, Armenians ranked second in terms of population among the ethnic groups in Baku city. However, the Talysh and Tatars were presented together, and if presented separately, Armenians would occupy the first place.
