Robert Ghazaryan, director of the Geghard Scientific and Analytical Foundation, and analyst Gor Margaryan gave a lecture in Moscow titled ‘Key Issues of Armenian History and Azerbaijani Historical Falsifications.’ The event was hosted by the Lazaryan Center for Armenian Studies of the Diocese of Russia and New Nakhijevan of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Speaking about the stages of the development of Armenian statehood and the traditions of statehood in the Armenian Highland, Robert Ghazaryan noted that Azerbaijani historiography attempts to deny the existence of Armenian statehood and to ignore ancient historical sources that attest to its antiquity.
During his presentation, Gor Margaryan outlined the main areas of activity, achievements, and current challenges of the Geghard Foundation. In his remarks, Margaryan emphasized: ‘Despite the fact that perceptions of Russia within Azerbaijani society are contradictory and negative, Azerbaijanis have achieved considerable success in disseminating Azerbaijani propaganda narratives in Russia and among Russian-speaking audiences. Whether this has been done through “caviar diplomacy” or by other means is not the main issue. The point is that our work in the Russian information space is both urgent and essential—at the very least to counter the spread of these falsifications.’
The speakers also discussed scholarly and analytical studies related to the historical, political, demographic, and cultural issues of Armenia and the region, the key challenges the Armenian studies faces, possible solutions, as well as Soviet and post-Soviet Azerbaijani historiography.
