Safi al-Din al-Urmawi, musician, music theorist, and calligrapher, was born in 1216 in Urmia (Iran). He was of Iranian origin. In his youth, Al-Urmawi moved to Baghdad, where, alongside music, he studied Arabic, history, and calligraphy. Later, he gained prominence in both calligraphy and music, serving in the court of Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustasim. Urmawi composed works in Persian and Arabic.
Azerbaijanis claim that Urmawi was Azerbaijani, basing this solely on the fact that Urmia is currently located in Iran's West Azerbaijan province, over which they also make unfounded claims. However, references to Urmawi make no mention of Azerbaijan, and he never composed in Azerbaijani, as in the 13th century, there was no Azerbaijani people, no such language, and no such state.
