The 7th-century Armenian historian Movses Kaghankatvatsi's work, "History of the Caucasian Albania," preserves information about the poet Davtak Kertogh and his poem "Lament on the Death of the Great Prince Jvanshir." Davtak Kertog lived in Partav, at the court of the great prince Jvanshir, descended from the Persian Mihranids. According to Azerbaijani "scientific logic," the "Lament" was written in one of the languages of Caucasian Albania, Gargaric, and then translated into Armenian, and that it is a "sample of Albanian literature." Azerbaijanis consider themselves the heirs of the Caucasian Albanians. They declare not only Davtak Kertogh but also the hero of the poem, Prince Jivanshir, to be Caucasian Albanians, and therefore "Azerbaijanis." I
It is unlikely that the 7th-century Armenian poet Davtak Kertogh and the the prince Jvanshir of Caucasian Albania, an adherent of the Armenian Apostolic Church, ever imagined that in the 20th century they would become the next "heroes" Azerbaijani "historical" fantasies.
