As the host of the upcoming COP29 climate conference in November, Azerbaijan has called for global peace, proposing a truce for approximately four weeks.
The British newspaper The Guardian has exposed Aliyev's hypocrisy. “Climate summit host positioning itself as peacemaker but is accused of ethnic cleansing and imprisoning opponents,” the article states.
Azerbaijan's message is the following, “Cop29 is a unique chance to bridge divides and find paths towards lasting peace. Conflicts increase greenhouse gas emissions and ravage the environment, polluting soil, water and air. The devastation of ecosystems and pollution caused by conflicts worsen climate change and undermine our efforts to safeguard the planet.”
With a small adjustment the statement sounds more precise, “Conflicts, including those provoked by Azerbaijan, ravage the environment, polluting soil, water and air. The devastation of ecosystems and pollution caused by conflicts worsen climate change and undermine our efforts to safeguard the planet.”
One year ago, on September 19, "peace-loving" Azerbaijan launched yet another attack on Artsakh, cynically presenting its actions as an "anti-terrorist operation." As a result, over the following two weeks, nearly 120,000 Armenians from Artsakh were forcibly displaced. Even though international human rights organizations have documented and condemned Azerbaijan's genocidal actions, Baku has faced no consequences.
Moreover, as if in reward, Azerbaijan has been granted the right to host the Cop29 summit, which serves more to promote Azerbaijan's interests than to address climate issues.
Paul Polman, a climate activist, said: “The idea of a ‘Cop truce’ is a deeply cynical PR stunt by Azerbaijan designed to distract the world’s attention away from its ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh last year”.
Azerbaijan, a serial peace disrupter, hypocritically calls for global ceasefires while simultaneously threatening Armenia. Its actions clearly show that it is not committed to peace in the region.
