Azerbaijanis consider Fuzuli an Azerbaijani poet, but the reality is

Fuzuli (Mehmed bin Suleyman), a renowned poet of the 15th-16th centuries, was born in the city of Karbala, Iraq. It is likely that he had an Oghuz Turk origin, and there is speculation on Kurdish or Persian ancestry as well. He wrote in Persian, Arabic, and Turkic. Fuzuli never visited Atrpatakan or Shirvan, nor did he set foot on the territory of the present Republic of Azerbaijan. He never identified himself as Azerbaijani (for the simple reason that such a nation did not exist during his lifetime). It is accurate to refer to him as an Ottoman or Persian poet since the territory of Iraq was part of Safavid Persia initially and later the Ottoman Empire.
