Mosques in Azerbaijan are turned into dumping grounds

2026-11-02

In several settlements across Azerbaijan, mosques are being used as livestock barns, storage facilities, or garbage dumps. Azerbaijani human rights organizations have raised the alarm over these conditions.

For instance, according to reports, the Juma Mosque in the city of Khudat has been turned into a garbage dump and a shelter for drug addicts, where beer bottles and syringes have reportedly been found. A mosque in the Aghstafa District, dating back to the early 19th century, has also fallen into ruins. The 17th-century mosque in the village of Chinarli, in the Gakh district, is in a deplorable condition, while the Shah Sultan Hussein Mosque in the village of Novkhani is being used as a dumping ground, where even the carcasses of dead animals are discarded.

These and numerous other cases demonstrate that all historical and cultural monuments in Azerbaijan are under threat, regardless of whether they are Christian or Muslim.
