The 10th session of the States Parties to the “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of 2003” was held at UNESCO headquarters, where the representative of Azerbaijan, Elman Abdullayev said that “Azerbaijan is faithful to the values and principles of the convention and the country contributes to the protection of the intangible heritage during military conflicts and natural disasters."
Azerbaijan tries to present itself to the world as a democratic and multicultural country. However, in reality, it continues to pursue oppressive policies that result in the violent appropriation of the region's ethnic cultures and their heritage. The protection of intangible cultural heritage requires respect for ethnic groups living in their original territories and respect for their religious, spiritual, and cultural values. Nevertheless, the authorities in Azerbaijan exploit these values for their own purposes.
This involves not only the genocidal policy towards the Armenians and the violent appropriation of their material and intangible cultural heritage but also the oppression of ethnic and religious minorities living in Azerbaijan. The Udi community has become a tool in the hands of Aliyev’s despotic propaganda, which has been used to destroy the identity of Armenians following the Artsakh War of 2020. "Udi rituals" were invented and carried out in Dadivank, Amaras, and the St. Astvatsatsin Church in Tsakuri.
At the same time, oppression continues in Azerbaijan against religious and national minorities that do not serve the regime's state propaganda.
